My Lord,

With reference to Your Lordship's Des-patches noted in the margin, I have the honour to transmit the enclosed copy of a letter from the Local Auditor on the subject of the present condition of the audit of the Railway Accounts.

2. The arrears disclosed are serious, and it is evident that the audit cannot be put on a satisfactory basis without some extra assistance.

It is more especially desirable that the appointment of an Examiner of Railway Accounts should be expedited. The Consulting Engineers in their letter of the 4th July last stated that they had hitherto been unable to procure a satisfactory candidate.

3. In these circumstances I have the honour to request Your Lordship's authority to engage an additional clerk on a salary of $960 rising to $1,200 to assist Mr. R.
